GenAI in Cybersecurity: Enhancing User Awareness and Enablement with a statistical insights driven approach

Using statistical insights to cultivate a security-conscious culture, develop targeted and proactive cybersecurity training and resources, and promote user enablement.

In continuation to my previous article Empowering Users with Accessible Cybersecurity Information through Generative AI: A Shift from Awareness to Enablement, This article explores strategies for enhancing user awareness and enablement through continuous improvement, with the ultimate goal of integrating cybersecurity controls more effectively into organizational processes and operations.

“Trust but verify” has always been the mantra of cybersecurity professionals. Optimizing processes and ensuring the continuous improvement of control effectiveness is a constant pursuit of cybersecurity teams.

Providing resources and enabling users with a curated GenAI platform offers easy access to information, centralized management of information quality and integrity. When combined with a role-specific prompt library with high availability, the platform presents a compelling use case for employees to frequently utilize the information. This can drive a security-conscious culture and increase the adoption and integration of cybersecurity controls in operations across the organization.

However, providing resources does not guarantee usage. There may still be reasons why the platform is not widely used by users. To address this challenge, an oversight mechanism, preferably a data-driven insight dashboard, needs to be engineered.

This dashboard may provide insights into the usage of the GenAI platform, such as, but not limited to:

  • Top 5, Most used prompts
  • Top 3, Teams with the highest GenAI platform usage
  • Frequency of platform usage by number of users
  • Number of users who have only used the platform just once or twice

By applying concepts from e-commerce platforms, such as monitoring abandoned carts, most viewed products, and best-selling products, and others, we can effectively manage and improve the usage of our GenAI platform. The platform is a product provided to users, but once operational, monitoring usage and trends will be crucial in understanding how effectively the platform is assisting in driving continuous improvement.

Collect data on the user sentiments about the GenAI platform, try and assess what the users feels about the GenAI platform. Gather feedback on how the platform has helped increasing efficiency, let users rate on a scale of 1 to 5. Interview a sample users to assess the complexity or ease of use of the platform, let users rate on a scale of 1 to 5. Apply these results in exploring more innovative ideas to promote the usage of the GenAI platform.

Using these insights, the team can make informed decisions about the focus and rigour of user awareness and enablement initiatives, such as:

  • Conducting tailored user awareness sessions to promote the usage of the GenAI platform
  • Implementing a top-down approach to drive the adoption of the GenAI platform
  • Ensure consistency and improve quality of information used across the organization
  • Optimizing the most extracted and used information to provide better responses
  • Identifying teams with the least platform usage, providing the opportunity for process reviews to ensure sufficient security checkpoints in the operations

The ultimate goal of cybersecurity awareness is to equip users with the ability to identify cybersecurity issues and implement best practices and integrate security controls in the organization’s operations. By providing a GenAI platform and driving continuous improvement through data-driven insights, we can significantly enhance the adoption of a security-conscious culture. Users will be enabled with well-curated and optimized information that adheres to organizational policies and industry standards.

In conclusion, the integration of AI in cybersecurity not only enhances user enablement but also provides opportunity to identify and integrate security controls across organization, reinforcing a security-conscious culture. By leveraging these insights, organizations can ensure their cybersecurity measures are not just reactive, but proactive and predictive, providing a comprehensive defence against potential threats.
